Condo Owners Can Install Solar, Even Without Building Permission
Just because you live in a condo, you're no longer entirely at the mercy of your building association to install solar power in your apartment.
The National Council has amended the Condominium Act so that building associations now have a stricter threshold if they want to decline your request.
As of the time this blog was published, the Federal Council still needs to approve the change, but it is expected to pass. The amendment takes effect on September 1st, 2024.
What's Part of the Amendemnt
You'll be able to plug in solar panels with a maximum 800W output, as long as they are exclusively used for balconies or terraces and connected to the condo building's electricity.
Your building association can still refuse, but it is tougher. They can say "no" if:
-
The installation would damage the building.
-
The installation would impede the rights of other condo owners, such as causing glare.
-
The installation would disrupt the appearance of the condo building.
-
The installation would cause danger, such as overloading power lines.

No Tools Required
If you're not mechanically minded, that's all right. Skip the contractor and DIY this three-part setup without any tools.
- FS20 Panel: Put this solar panel in an area where it will catch the most sunlight. It's lightweight, weighing only a fifth of a traditional rigid solar panel. It's also convenient, fitting on curved balconies or walls and on top of vans.
- Solarbank 2 Plus: This has an integrated microinverter, making setup even more simple. You don't need to worry about installing extra devices, like a hub, either.
- Smart Plug: For more power control, plug in this smart accessory and pair with Solarbank. Now, you have smart power without a complex distribution board.
Optimized and Automatic Energy
Here's how you get the most out of your Anker SOLIX balcony power system.
Anker SOLIX Smart Plugs monitor device power consumption and relay that information to the microinverter, so every device gets only as much energy as needed. Excess energy is stored in the battery.
If Smart Plugs are deactivated, the system supplies your electrical circuits with a set amount of energy.
